Breaking Through: Internationally Trained Dentists Accessing Licensure – Continuing the Conversation brought together stakeholders and Internationally Trained Dentists (ITDs) across Canada to discuss the challenges faced by ITDs and identify potential solutions. The diverse experiences and cultural insights of ITDs present an invaluable opportunity to address pressing gaps in Canada’s dental workforce.
Canada is projected to face a shortfall of 3,000 dentists between 2022 and 2031 according to Canadian Occupational Projection System. With only 65 dentists per 100,000 people, as reported by the Canadian Dental Association, the current system struggles to meet the growing demands for dental care services.
This conference highlighted the shared values critical for driving change:
- Recognizing and understanding challenges from all perspectives—whether shaping, implementing, or experiencing policies.
- Leveraging open, meaningful dialogue to address challenges, achieve mutually beneficial solutions and fostering open and constructive dialogue to develop collaborative, win-win solutions
